Facial paralysis is the total loss of voluntary muscle movement of one side of the face.
About 80% of all cases of facial paralysis in adults are due to a condition called Bell's palsy, in which the facial nerve becomes inflamed. Causes are Bell’s palsy, trauma, tumours, herpes zoster oticus, acute and chronic ear diseases.
A thorough medical history and physical examination are the first steps in making a diagnosis.
Laboratory investigations include an audiogram, nerve conduction studies (ENoG), computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance (MR) imaging.
