A nasal polyp forms gradually from localized swelling of the sinus mucosa or from the nasal mucosa.. At first, the polyp is small. With each recurrence of submucosal edema, it becomes larger, until it appears as a smooth, pale tumor. In most instances, polyps are multiple. They can cause obstructive symptoms when they protrude into the airway. They may be large or numerous enough to occlude the nose completely.
The real cause of polyp formation is not known yet. Allergy, upper respiratory infections, some parts of bacteria may be responsible in some cases. Nasal polyp formation may be concomitant with asthma and painkiller allergies.
Nasal polyps are usually diagnosed by anterior examination of the nose with endoscopes. Imaging techniques may usually be obtained to see the extension of the polyps.
Steroids are usually recommended as medical treatment to make your polyps to shrink. Surgery, especially endoscopic sinus surgery are popular to treat nasal polyp recently. Nasal polyp tend to recur after surgery especially in asthma and pain killer allergy cases.
